in my backyard

VERY NICE

Write here, Joel.

in my backyard
army men
fought their battles
with plastic guns
and melted crayolas

an old aquarium
with a handful of tadpoles
from the ditch
grew legs and hopped away
couldn’t say which
way they went

the sandbox
shared by the cat
how I lived through
the germs that
i played in
i don’t know

the old barn
seemed huge
and dark beyond measure
smelling of old wood and hay
and ancient treasure

the coins a friend
and i buried
in a box we carried
up the hill
someday maybe they’ll
find it and wonder

days lasted forever
the future was far away
time to ponder that later
for a boy in the country
a whole world ago

Day 13 Chasing Grace – We Say

NICE

mydaybydaymusic

Chasing Grace - We SayChasing Grace not only seem to have completely slipped through my fingers, but also most of the internet with their fresh and upbeat pop music. Granted, a couple of their covers have racked up a lot of youtube hits, however, the most important thing, their own music has much less coverage despite its high standard. Universally pleasing, their singles Trust and Bullet are both very impressive, however the short and concise We Say is the track that has really had me scrambling back for more. Comprising of 20 year old Phillip Plested and 18 year old Grace Ackerman, Chasing Grace (I see what they’ve done there!) have an instant likeability factor about them, and the boy / girl vocal arrangement is top notch. OK, you could say this is just generic pop, but it has put a smile on my face today, so for that alone, it is well worth the…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside the Boatwright’s Shop

I LOVE BOATS ESPECIALLY WODDEN BOATS AS THEY USE TO MAKE FROM DAY 1

John Roberts Photography (and other stuff)

If we live near the water we see the outside of boats everyday. If we own a boat (or better yet, have a friend with a boat) we’re familiar with the inside of a boat. But seldom do we see what it takes to construct one. So here’s a look inside a boatwright’s work shop. This is at the Wooden Boat Center on Lake Union in Seattle.

These places are good for the soul. There’s the comfort of holding well worn hand tools and the smells of sawn cedar and freshly applied varnish. And in the Winter, there’s a small wood burning stove for warmth on cold rainy days.

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

THANK U

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

Tucked behind the Filipino market in Kota Kinabalu Central, Sabah, and just beside the night market cum food bazaar lies a mosque by the name of “Masjid Al-Aman”. Had my friend and I not ventured walking inside this bazaar instead of walking by the normal route, we would not have discovered this gem right here. For Muslims, amongst the business of life, it is calming to go inside and have some personal time with God.

mardmood: This post is also part of the series “My Kinabalu Story” based on my expedition to Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia on 26th September to 1st October 2012. For more chapters go to ‘Kinabalu Khronicles’ in the Categories section.
